On March 2, 2021, the relevant research results were published in Nature Communications, a sub-journal of Nature, entitled Unlocking history through automated virtual unfolding of sealed documents imaged by X-ray microtomography (Unlocking history: based on X-ray microtomography). Automatic virtual unfolding of sealed documents imaged by radiographic microtomography).
Using high-resolution volume scans produced by high-contrast time-lapse integral X-ray microtomography (XMT), they developed a method of "virtual unfolding", a fully automated, reconstructed and volume scanning methods for imaging virtual unfolded letters.
